The early report on the synthesis of polyketone resin was applied by George and others of DuPont company, which was published in the United States in 1936. They synthesized amber resin with Borneone and formaldehyde under the catalysis of potassium hydroxide. The resin can be mixed with tung oil, ethyl cellulose, nitrocellulose and solvent to produce coatings with good performance. In 1940, Emil and others used acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and formaldehyde respectively to synthesize the resin under the catalysis of potassium carbonate. According to different synthesis conditions, viscous or brittle polyketone resin can be prepared.

Polyaldehyde resin, also known as aldehyde resin or A81, is a light color anti yellowing and hardening resin. It is non-toxic and low viscosity. It is soluble in most solvents used in coatings and can be miscible with many basic resins used in coatings. It can significantly improve the gloss, fullness, surface hardness and flexibility of coatings. It has good wetting to pigments and can be used in high solid content coatings.

Due to the unstable performance and dark color of the polyketone resin synthesized at that time, the application of polyketone resin is limited. After World War II, Dee developed the preparation method of cyclohexanone formaldehyde and 3-methylcyclohexanone or 4-Methylcyclohexanone formaldehyde resin in 1951. The obtained resin is colorless and transparent solid. The yield of cyclohexanone formaldehyde resin can reach 126% (relative to the quality of cyclohexanone, the same below). Polyketone resin has realized industrialization and entered a relatively mature stage, Its main variety is cyclohexanone formaldehyde resin. During this period, with the rapid development of automobile industry, machinery industry and architectural decoration industry, the demand for coatings also increased significantly, which also greatly promoted the development of polyketone resin.

The research on polyketone resin in China began in the 1980s. In 1985, Shanghai Xinhua resin factory began to develop polyketone resin. In 1991, Liu xiuhai of the factory reported the method of synthesizing polyketone resin catalyzed by sodium hydroxide. The resin has good compatibility with solvents. It is mainly used for plastic color printing ink, electrochemical hot stamping foil and garden refill ink, which can replace imported products. In 2000, Liaoning and other companies also developed polyketone resin for coating additives, with a resin yield of 92%.
